Recording: March Monthly Meet-up

Announcing 2 new features in the membership

Hello!

This is the recording of our online meet-up last night. I hope you enjoy it!

There are two parts:

  • Overview and update on the SC resources (0 - 17 minutes)

  • Two new features on the Notion site (17 - 40 minutes)

(We had a 20-minute conversation at the end too but we don’t record that part.)

We’ve been working on the two new features for a while now so I’m really glad to be able to “get them out into the world”, or within the membership site on Notion at least.

Here’s a bit more background.

New feature #1: SC Lessons

Every time we publish a newsletter, we repurpose that content into a “Lesson” format and add to the archive on the Notion site. We have gone all the way back to August last year so there are now 30 lessons to get stuck into.

The purpose of doing this is to make the archive of content more accessible and searchable. This new format means you can search content by category and tag. So, for example, if you want to get stuck into censored stories you can do that; Want to learn COVID vocab? There’s a tag for that; Or, if you want to read into stories of entrepreneurial ups and downs, you can do that too!

The lesson format also structures the content in a more consumable way: Learn, Listen, Read, Practice. Which hopefully takes you from “zero” on any subject to “getting it” by the end.

Notion also has some cool features which we’ve made use of. Like linked headings on the page, and embedded audio files.

You can access the Lessons page on the SC Notion page here.

(You should have access to this page, please email me if there’s a problem)

New feature #2: Recommended Reading

This is an evolution of the Chinese Media Masterclass we did last month.

It’s a database of Chinese language media resources we find as we are researching stories for this newsletter. This includes WeChat public accounts, mainstream and niche media, and podcasts. We’ll also be adding YouTube channels soon too.

We add a few new resources each week as we come across them.

You can click in to each entry in this database and learn a bit about it in Chinese, and access links to content.

They are all great resources, but we also rank them from 1 to 3. Anything that is a 3 is a “must read”.

So if you’re looking for something new to read, or for a certain kind of content, and don’t want to wade through endless websites, then this tool will help you do that.

You can access the Recommended Reading page on the Notion site here.

Whaddya Think?

Please do email me and let me know what you think. Or leave a message in the comments.

And if you can have problems / questions please just let us know.

I’m off to China tomorrow for a very busy and short visit. So I will be less available on email than usual.

But the newsletter and podcast will turn up as always on Saturday mornings.

Look forward to catch up up when I’m back!

Have a great week.

Andrew
